it seems that i didn't post for the entire month of january! sorry!!!

working on the animatic for my film really tires me out... i don't get much done each day

it's not like when i'm working on vis dev type stuff, i don't get absorbed in it

i just get frustrated

but it seems it's coming along

and for some reason my film will only be about 1.5 minutes this year???

i'll just have time to make an awesome portfolio as well, i suppose

or just a really awesome film and a thrown together portfolio as usual

anyway since my animatic is finally coming together i did some vis dev stuff after all...

somehow although i started out with the bottom image i ended up with this newspaper collage look even though it's all digital

i kind of like it

oh this is a quick doodle but

ah i've really been lazy these past few days

well i thought since i'd gained a few pounds maybe i'd finally work it off and i started exercising a lot

and since i exercised a lot i figured that was a good enough excuse to waste away all the rest of my time reading manga

but reading manga is really unfulfilling...

so i doodled a doodle.

but

doodling doesn't fill my empty stomach. i'm hungry and i can't concentrate.

i took some cheap classes at a near by community art center/school thing

so here is the work i came out with...

in addition to the paintings i posted before

those were from the same class

it's not much but it was good experience... now i feel more confident to paint on my own

but motivation is another question >>;

number one is a landscape painted on site... about 4.5 hours, acrylic

this is a street in front of the school where i took the class... painted on site, about 2 hours.

somehow i feel like it is sending messages of entrapment... i remember purposefully picking an angle where the cars in front blocked the view of the end of the street... plus the do not enter sign and the fences. i must have been in a strange mood. i like the first one better.

and this one... i think i was kind of bored.

Ohhh, I have no time to draw because of my Japanese course. I am doing a weekly painting workshop thing but most of the other people in the class are amateurs... The teacher was also very surprised that a student of animation could possibly understand value... The class is far too short, once a week, 4 weeks, 2.5 hours each meeting = 10 hours total. That's nothing. Brrrr. Especially for painting. This is the result of the first week's class. It's a flower still life (acrylic,) took about 40 min.

the contest was to design a character for a squenix mmorpg
one of the prizes is a tablet, small, medium, or large for 3rd, 2nd, or 1st place.
i wouldn't mind a new tablet

what do dA points even do? can you buy stuff with them? i guess i'd buy prints and tshirts

here are some recent things i've done at calarts.
first is a silhouette project for my color and design class.

this is for you, ika-yarou.
those dark areas in the corner are shadows the paper cast on my wall.

after hours of cutting this with an exacto knife my left index finger felt like it was going to cut off. it was a painful experience which i will likely soon repeat, seeing as ika-yarou assigned us 5 panels and i've only done 2. yes, this is only a wip.

here are some figure drawings. this is the first time i used marker in my figure drawing. i thought it would be more difficult because usually i am not good with more permanent media (markers, ink, etc) because i like erasing. surprisingly enough i came out with quite a few drawings i really liked, and i realized that i've already improved a lot. unfortunately this was the one day the teacher was absent.

this one is a little older... every time there's a back pose in costume i usually like to draw the garment.
i just realized that all my best drawings are of women. i always thought they were easier to draw, though.

this one is also a little older... that cut off in the corner was another piece of newsprint that i was too lazy to move.

there was another pose to match this next one from the same model, but the teacher kept my drawing. i thought he was going to put it in the display case but he didn't. my temporary goal is to get into the display case. it's sort of a stupid goal because the drawings the teacher picked are based much on his taste and not necessarily the quality of the drawing. not to say that he picks bad drawings, rather that there are other equally worthy drawings that he overlooks for one reason or another. this is what i tell myself when i wonder why my work never gets picked, while other people get pieces picked weekly.

i've done a lot of other work too, like characters and perspective and other things, but since those are not usually my strongest i don't like to post them.

by the way, it's 5:11 AM and my feet are very cold.

I'm flying to CalArts in 9 days! I can't believe it's single digits now. Actually, I'll be doing some sightseeing in LA for 2 days after I get there, and then move in day is September 7th.

In other news, I got a haircut. It feels really strange to have such short hair. And bangs. Weird.

I went to figure drawing again today and I got SO LOST driving there. Damn those rotaries. I was so confused, I drove around for like an hour before I called my mom and she helped me find the way home over the phone.

I went to figure drawing today... Started off with some brush tip marker pens. I'm better at stuff you can erase/smudge/layer with to cover up mistakes, ha ha. Ink is too permanent.

And now come my favorites, more chalk pastel drawings. I need to replenish my supply, I'm out of yellow. It literally crumbled in my fingers, I drew with it so much.

Today's model was really athletic looking. She had a major swimsuit tan that I did not draw. I've been trying to work out more, myself.

This drawing wasn't finished because it was only a 10 min pose... the other two were 18 min so I had more time. I just cropped out the unfinished part, ha.

Recently all I do is make cake. So it seems. Here are 3 cakes I've made in the past month:

First up is the chocolate peanut butter cake. I made this cake with Alison simply because I love chocolate and peanut butter. Unfortunately, no one else seems to love it as much as I do. Thus I ended up eating a larger portion of the cake by myself than planned.

This cake was a super dense chocolate cake with peanut putter frosting on top and between the three layers, topped with a chocolate drizzle. It was overwhelmingly sweet at first, but as the days went on it somehow tasted better. I'd say it was at its best about 4 days after we made it.

Next up is the red velvet cake. I've made one of these before this past spring. My friend requested it for her birthday, so I made it again. The color comes from the 2 bottles of food coloring we added (3 were suggested but it was expensive/I spaced out.) Everyone seems to think there is some kind of magical mystery behind the color (myself included, previously) but it's just plain old food coloring. This cake is actually chocolate, though. It just contains a lot less cocoa than the first. Also, the cream cheese frosting is the best.

Credits on decoration go to my friend, Jenn, who wrote "Happy Birthday" and designed that bunny from burnt cake, two chocolate chips, and frosting.

The last cake, and the most recent one (I made it with Jenn's help again today) was the almond berry cake. There were three layers of almond cake (light and fluffy, made mostly of eggs) with lemon marscapone cheese and cream filling, plus berries between each layer.

Many things did actually go wrong with these cakes but I choose to omit them and show off the pretty pictures.

I swear that every time I drive to figure drawing it's like a life or death experience. I always get lost, and this time there was this terrifying torrential rain storm. I was hydroplaning through puddles! I guess that now I value my life all the more.

These three are in chalk pastel. I did some charcoal too but I didn't come out with anything good. I'm going to have to skip next week too to go pick up my sister from camp in Maine. I should have gone to figure drawing last week when I had the chance, but I went out to dinner with a friend instead.

This sitting pose is my favorite drawing.

I don't know what happened to the face on this one.

Also I was weirded out because I definitely had this model at Art Institute of Boston like two years ago. I can't believe I recognized her. It was like de ja vu.
